TOPIC: J4 with C-85 vs O-200

J4 with C-85 vs O-200 4 weeks 2 days ago #962

Looking for advice and opinions on installing a C-85 vs O-200 on a J4. I've been told that the O-200 will necessitate adding extra weight in the tail to balance the CG, thus giving similar performance as a J4 with a C-85.

Also, any opinions on best prop for J4 climb performance?

According to the Continental Maintenance Manual there is only about 3lbs difference between the C85-12 and the O-200 basic engines. Accessories such as standard vs lightweight starter and generator could easily offset that. Another possible consideration is the fact that the C85-12 is a specified item on the Type Certificate for the J4A, whereas the O-200 is not. Perhaps there is an STC for installing the O-200? Or you could use a C85-12 modified with the O-200 crankshaft etc and have much the same power output. That engine modification is STC'd.
Of course, at the moment I just happen to have a C85-12 engine that I will sell, if that's the way you decide to go.
Hope this helps, Bill
